Backstory/Timeline
Kala Laren was born on the Bajoran colony on Dreon VII. Her parents had escaped the occupation and tried to build a better life there. Her early childhood was a simple time, her father an engineer that focused on keeping the colony's machines running and her mother was a nurse that worked in the local sickbay. She attended school and her parents instilled a strong sense of morality and belief in the Prophets. Her older brother, Rento, found himself as part of a underground movement that served as an intelligence network for the Maquis. He was only 16 when word came from the Maquis that the Dominion war was about to break and Jem'hadar ships were headed toward the colonies.
Rento, warned his family first and then the colony leadership. Laren's father hijacked a small warp capable shuttlecraft to get his family to Bajor for safety. Rento chose to go with the Maquis. Eventually, Rento would survive the war, only to end up in a Federation prison for helping the Maquis. As Lauren grew up, she believed that the Prophets had saved him from the war and prison was his penance for choosing the Maquis over his family and faith. When Laren turned 17 she began training with the Bajoran militia, in secret. When she turned 20 she made it official. She didn't really understand Bajor's reluctance to join the Federation, but definitely understood the need for Bajor to be able to protect itself.
When Bajor finally was admitted into the Federation, Laren immediately applied to Starfleet Academy to become a marine. Starfleet recognized that she had plenty of training with the Bajoran Militia and decided to put her into the second year of her program.
