Operations & HCO

I have some difficulty accepting a difference between these two departments on any vessel, but especially on a Starbase. In my mind, HCO is three small departments (Helm, Communications, and Operations) that were lumped together for the sake of efficiency. Now, on a Starbase, Helm is replaced by Flight Control (unless you have a really, really fast Starbase.. or your engineers are doing Bad Things(tm) to the station-keeping thrusters), and Communications and Operations go way up in terms of importance simply because there is so much more to take care of. A Starbase makes a natural hub of activity, after all.

So, really, I don't care if we call it Operations or HCO (although calling is HCO on a vessel with no true Helm seems kinda silly), but they should be one department, not two separate ones.

Thoughts? -RogueGypsy47 13:10, 2 May 2007 (CDT)

I agree. Helm tends to disappear, other than regular checkups on teh station's position. Operations becomes the all encompassing departments, where "helm" is only the aforementioned afterthought, communications is also a sub-dependent of OPS, but of much more importance, engineering is (and always has been) a sub-department of OPS, likewise security. If "helm" needs more to do, than it takes a more "airport"-like approach with scheduling and monitoring incoming and outgoing vessels. -Varaan 09:04, 4 May 2007 (CDT)
Dropped by and couldn't help but take a look. ;-) Technically, it's all Operations. But if you're going with the "airport" approach, it's technical name is Flight Control. <g> I do seem to recall some starbases employed fighter wings and Wing Commanders (WCs) in the years past. That could give Helm something to do. DCody 21:12, 4 May 2007 (CDT)
