Personality

Petra lives in the present, in a world of facts and concrete needs, and is constantly overseeing her personal environment to ensure everything is running smoothly and efficiently. She is a strong believer in the rule of law and regulations, and that authority must be earned; as a result she leads by example and demonstrates dedication and honesty, rejecting laziness, shirking responsibility, and shortcuts. Her personal set of beliefs are close to inviolate; her faith in the surety of facts means that she holds to her principles even against heavy resistance, and pushes her unclouded vision of what is or is not acceptable. As a result, she values competence and productivity in others, and can be ruthless with those who fail to meet her standards.

She is willing to dive into challenging projects, and her affinity for organisation, structure and follow-through usually delivers exceptional results. Her eye for detail, ability to streamline systems of work, and meticulous record-keeping means she completes her tasks on time and in a way that ensures the benefits can be continued by others. However, she can struggle with out-of-the-box thinking and innovation, and sometimes feels as though other people improving on her methods is a personal failure on her part.

Her friendships and relationships are founded on trust, loyalty and a shared outlook on life. She finds it difficult to establish common ground with more freewheeling personalities, especially those who constantly disagree with her principles and beliefs. Among her friends, she can be outgoing and sociable, always happy to bring someone along as she pursues her sporting or outdoor activities, attends a book club, or hosts a dinner party.

When stressed or overwhelmed, she often feels isolated from others. She can feel misunderstood, undervalued and taken for granted, and though normally able to express herself well, can struggle to put these feelings into words and communicate them to others. Likewise, she is not naturally in tune with the feelings of others, and if she does make the effort to listen and understand, can be judgemental or insensitive.

Hobbies

  • Reading: An avid reader since her youth, Petra makes sure to put time aside every day to make some progress in her latest book.
  • Sports: An athletics fan, Petra enjoys running, swimming, skiing and cycling. During her time at Starfleet HQ, she took part in several triathlons and biathlons, putting in a respectable performance among her peers.
  • Cooking: Always a fan of trying new foods, in recent years she has begun to make them herself and enjoys sourcing fresh products to cook old favourites and discover new ones.

Living and Working Spaces

Petra’s personal quarters and office reflected her precise and organised nature; neat, tidy and everything having an assigned place.

Her quarters are filled with fond memories, with pictures of her enjoying her hobbies on Earth with friends and family: skiing in the Alps, enjoying a meal in Paris, bathing in Iceland’s natural geothermal springs, and hiking across the southern coast. A hand-knitted blanket in a traditional Icelandic pattern has a place on her couch, and a few succulents add a touch of green.

She has also added a few personal touches to her small office; a wooden sculpture from Iceland, paired pictures of the Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, and her graduation picture from the Academy.

Ambitions, Achievements and Disappointments

Petra is proud of her commission and her current posting as the Triumphant’s security chief, the culmination of a great deal of hard work and tough choices. It has been a long road for her; first working through the enlisted ranks in an administrative role, attending officer training, and finally changing career track to security and tactical via the gruelling Advanced Tactical Training course.

Her greatest disappointment is with herself, aware that in the past she has sacrificed her own ambitions, goals and happiness for others when they had no intention of doing the same for her.

Background

Born and raised in Iceland on a rural horse ranch, Petra knew from an early age she wanted to see and experience more than Earth had to offer. She enlisted with Starfleet as soon as she was 18, and advised to pursue a career in administration where her attention to detail and organisational skills would serve her well. Her time in the fleet gave most of what she wanted—the opportunity to see the galaxy and experience a wildly different life—but she often felt as though she was following the path someone else had laid out for her. One of her greatest regrets is from her time on Starbase 15, when she let insecurity get the better of her and turned down Admiral Swain's offer to attend the Academy as an officer candidate.

Petra met her future husband, Cory Stoyer, while serving aboard the USS Excalibur-A. After a brief separation following reassignments, they were reunited once again aboard the USS Victory where they began a whirlwind romance, becoming engaged in less than two months. After transferring to the USS Gorkon with most of the Victory’s crew, the pair were married by Captain Quinn Reynolds in a small, private ceremony on stardate 239301.20.

A reassignment soon after to Starfleet Headquarters saw the couple separated again, though this turned out to be a blessing in disguise. When the Gorkon was sucked into an alternate reality and was declared MIA, Petra joined a rag tag group known as the Yarahla Nine, who stole the USS Yarahla in order to search for and rescue the Gorkon. After the group successfully brought the Gorkon home, they were arrested by Starfleet Security, but finally released without charge thanks to public pressure and some canny lawyering.

The experience left her with a craving to challenge herself more, and with the support of her commanding officer, Petra applied to Officer Candidate School. She studied many of the courses via distance learning, finishing up with an intensive three months at the Academy. After graduation, she was promoted to Ensign and returned to the Gorkon as Rear Admiral Reynolds’ Flag Aide.

Her new-found confidence and happiness was not to last. Petra discovered her husband had been lying about his feelings for her best friend, and so she requested a secondment on a different ship in the taskforce to get some space. When he made no move to repair their marriage, Petra realised it was over, filed for divorce, and accepted a long-standing officer to serve with Vice Admiral Swaine at Starfleet Command.

As prestigious as the posting was, working on Earth was not the future she had wanted for herself when she first joined Starfleet. Nor could she shake the feeling she had spent most of her career in the lanes chosen by other people—from careers advisors pushing her into admin, to following her ex-husband around the fleet—and she made the decision to switch departments to carve out a future of her own choosing. With the support and recommendations of her previous CO and good friend, Captain Walter Brunsig, Starfleet accepted her into the Advanced Tactical Training programme. A year's worth of blood, sweat and tears later, she graduated and accepted a posting as Chief of Security and Tactical aboard the Triumphant.
