Pershan was born on El-Auria, before the fall, in 2251 to Larek and Urani, a pair of wealthy merchants. He and they escaped disaster with his by chance, as they were antiquing on Romulus when the Borg struck. When word of the disaster reached them, they found themselves without a home to return to. As they mourned family and friends they left behind, they made a new home in the belly of their cargo ship, the SS Maonad. Still a young boy, Pershan assisted in the family trade, and took on odd jobs around the ship of increasing importance. Around his thirtieth year, he'd accumulated enough savings that he could afford to finance his own tour of the Alpha and Beta quadrants. He visited every major world he could find in the civilized Galaxy, and returned to Romulus before its destruction, visitied Qo'Nos before and after Praxis blew. His single longest stay was on Ferenginar, where his budget was strained to the point that he developed a side hustle as a Life Coach and Business Consultant. After accumulating another small fortune, in his 92nd year, he decided to enter Starfleet. Because why not?

A jack-of-all-talents, Pershan felt that the rhythm of his consulting business lent itself well to the Counseling role on starships, and, surrounded by twenty-something-know-nothings, quickly found he was quite good at it. At least, in terms of providing advice. The long-term benefits of listening to Pershan took a while to materialize, but fortunately the long lives of El-Aurians lend themselves to patience, and Pershan saw a fair number of his baby Ensigns become retired Captains.

His own promotions were not so forthcoming, in no small part delayed by Pershan's own efforts. While serving on the USS Tarawa in late 2358, Ensign Pershan earned infamy. After a life-saving group therapy session at a remote outpost afflicted by a mind-altering virus, Captain Toten (the ship's Commanding Officer) attempted to promote Pershan. On a raised stage in the ship's secondary cargo bay, in front of assembled crew and officers, Ensign Pershan approached the Captain, shook his hand, smiled warmly, said "No thank you," and walked off. Since then, he took pains to make it clear to his subsequent Commanding Officers that he would not accept a promotion except under the most extreme circumstances.
