"The nanites have lawyers?!"
Geordi La Forge.
The nanites are a synthetic, artificial species of microscopic intelligent machines that have the ability to evolve and learn. They can be found in every quadrant and in many different forms from very simple to extremely complex.

History

In 2366 Wesley Crusher experimented with nanites aboard the USS Enterprise-D to see if he could enhance their capabilities, by letting them work together. When these nanites escaped they entered the Enterprise computer core where they multiplied and interfered with almost all ship operations. Their increasing numbers allowed them to develop collective intelligence.

When Doctor Paul Stubbs tried to kill them in order to prevent interference with his scientific experiments, the nanites retaliated by taking over control of the Enterprise life support systems and even tried to kill him. The targeted nature of these actions became proof of sentience and they became perceived as life forms.

The destruction of the Enterprise was prevented by Data who was able to talk to the nanites and as their spokesman was able to come to an agreement with Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The enhanced nanites repaired the damage to the ship's computers and were then transferred to Kavis Alpha IV, where they founded their own civilization.

Doctor Beverly Crusher suggested to use nanites as a weapon against the Borg during their incursion into the Federation in late 2366. The plan however was not implemented, as the process of preparing the nanites would have taken several weeks. By then the Federation may only have existed as part of the Borg Collective.

In 2367, use of the nanites to defeat the Borg was blocked because a case was brought before the Federation to prevent their use without their consent because the nanites are now legally protected and using them against the Borg as a weapon would be violating their rights. Geordi La Forge accepting the argument when Data explained that it is essentially the same as having him dismantled and copied simply to create new versions of him to fight the Borg.

Government

The Nanites created by the Federation were recognized as being sentient life forms and were granted the right to colonise a planet of their own. They seem to use a collective hive type form of government that allows all of them to participate and contribute to the final decision.

Description

A nanite is a microscopic robotic device and a form of nanotechnology. They are built by manipulating atoms and contain gigabytes of computer memory. They are small enough to enter living cells and could be programmed to do numerous tasks.

Physiology

A nanite is a microscopic robotic device and a form of nanotechnology. They are built by manipulating atoms and contained gigabytes of computer memory. They are small enough to enter living cells and could be programmed to do numerous tasks.

Nanites consist of several components with different functions. Nanites used in the 24th century are composed of a forward propulsion block, an Oneamisu receiver, a Ranma ½ gyro block, a hex growth stack, Otomo calibration, two reverse flow paddles, one cell membrane sensor and manipulator each, a telemetry antenna, a forward motion sensor, a crystal articulator, logic circuits arranged from A-F and G-L, a T-cell anti-receptor and an emergency dissolve system.

Psychology

While capable of high levels of intelligence they are not capable of emotional responses. Damage to their systems can result in unusual or unexpected responses or illogical activities.

Society

They do not have a typical social organization and since they are machines tend to work together to achieve their goals.

Economy

These tiny microscopic machines do not have any need for trade.

Military

These tiny microscopic machines do not have any form of military organization but if threatened they can co-operate to inflict damage to other technological systems as a way of defending themselves.

Federation Intelligence Files

A race of sub-microscopic robotic life-forms that were created by the Federation. The Federation produced nanites at a facility in Dakar, Senegal, a process which Doctor Paul Stubbs once observed.

The Nanites were recognized as being sentient lifeforms on stardate 43125.8 and were granted the right to colonize a planet of their own.

Under the care of Lt. Kevin Breeman two sentient colonies of nanites called smileys have been serving aboard the USS Ronin as auxiliary AI and engineering equipment.
