From the time the United Federation of Planets was founded by the four planetary governments of United Earth, Vulcan, the Andorian Empire, and Tellar, into a federal republic, they based the principles of the Federation on universal liberty, rights and equality to share their knowledge and resources in a peaceful cooperation of space exploration. The primary focus of the Federation has been, and remains to be, galaxy exploration, but the dark truth of the unknowns of space is that there will always be those who choose conflict over peace.

It is the policy of the Federation and Starfleet to exercise diplomacy and negotiations instead of engaging in armed conflict, however when diplomacy fails there must be a means to protect and defend the members of the Federation and their protectorate. Enter the Starfleet Marine Corps.

Formed widely after the ancient military forces of Earth, the Starfleet Marine Corps maintains much of the ideology and customs of their namesakes, the United States Marine Corps and the Royal Marines. For more than 700 years, the tradition of the Marines to be the first line defenders of freedom and justice prevails in the modern Starfleet Marine Corps.
