No Rest for the Wicked

C. Egan Manno

Captain's Log, Stardate 239012.25

The Garuda has arrived at Deep Space Ten with the Mercury; between the Garuda's sickbay and the Mercury's, all injured crew members have been attended to, though I think that some will require longer recuperation periods. Councilor Prianna's starship also remains on station and will until a replacement warp core for the Mercury arrives, which should be within the next three days. At that time, the councilor's ship will escort the Mercury back to Federation space, after which the Mercury will need six months minimum in a drydock facility. The Garuda will be the only starship assigned to the Menthar Corridor mission for that duration.

Captain's Personal Log, Stardate 239012.25

And I do mean the only starship. Certainly there's Deep Space Ten and its support vehicles, but I imagined I'd be getting advice from a veteran starship and her experienced captain. And speaking of which, there's been no sign of Captain Kells, if I can still call him that, since the rescue of his crew from Nygel II. The shuttlecraft he was in has disappeared, and I've been informed by Lieutenant Commanders Rahman and Saveron that he has resigned. Apparently this wasn't a split-second decision, though, as I've followed a strange trail that involves some sort of hush-hush hearing and the Mercury's counselor, an Ensign Calavera, with three additional pips. A hell of a battlefield commission, hm? But while there's quite a lot that doesn't add up, I have been trying to avoid too much of it for now, as it's my hope that -- with Kells gone -- they'll pull me back out and assign Commander Ross or Captain Reynolds to the Garuda.

The Kubarey

Captain's Log, Stardate 239101.31

The journey to Kubarey space has been for, the most part, uneventful. In fact, I believe the most memorable part of the trip was our unexpected rendezvous with Ambassador and Councilor Prianna. I have entered everything Ambassador Ventu told me about this so-called 'Ancient Alliance' into my official records and have received confirmation from Admiral Moday that her presence on the Garuda is proper and that her goal is legitimate -- but no more. Prianna, too, seems both polite and up-front about her, and the Cardassian government's, interest in the Kubarey and in Ventu's inquiries, but she will say no more than that. However, I shall take them both at their words and appearances for the time being, if only because it seems to the necessary thing to do.

Commander Ross informed me that his meeting with the department heads went well, as I had hoped it would. They are still primarily a cohesive unit, imported almost to a person from the Mercury, with the addition of Lieutenants Jolara and Handley-Page. They are as prepared as I could hope for, and perhaps more so than I. In any event, our contact point at Mu Crucis was met and satisfied and passed us on toward Rho Aurigae without revealing anything more than its approval for us to pass; I am certain that a record of our quick scans will show nothing of importance.

The Garuda arrived at Rho Aurigae nearly twenty-four hours ago, and we located a vessel in orbit around the fourth planet easily enough. However, this vessel is no easier for our scans to penetrate; it is as though it possesses some technology that disallows our active scans to learn anything more about it. Further, all hails to the ship have been ignored -- though our scanners have detected complex life and alloy structures on the planet below. It is my intention to beam down once a full day has passed and to confront our hosts -- or, at least, enquire into why they have ignored us so thoroughly.

I have spent the last few days observing the crew. These observations are not influenced by knowledge of prior missions. Upon my arrival I noted an unusual level of tension in the crew; the highest could be noticed among the senior officers I encountered including the captain.

It is clear to me that the crew has suffered a debilitating loss that has had emotional repercussions instead of physical. It is my observation that the crew is sharing in this loss, however, if there was a gag order on aspects of the prior mission, it would not be necessary. The crew is showing a united front that blocks any inquiry from an outsider, me included.

If I were to present a recommendation, it would be the following: Allow the crew to continue to process the situation as they are. The support structure is solid and should be maintained. I feel confident they will continue to do their duties above expected parameters.

Assistant Chief Medical Officer’s Log, Stardate 239109.22

Following a mission in the Menthar Corridor, Lt. Commander Alleran Tan collapsed in one of the turbolifts. He is experiencing a case of symbiotic rejection that I do not have any experience with this operation. I have read over reports of previous medical officers, Dr. Crusher and Dr. Bashier, in an effort to understand the procedure. What has me worried is that my Trill specialist, 1st Lieutenant Kesaan, is on the Columbia and is thus unable to help me. I have alerted Starfleet, and the Trill Symbiosis Committee, and XO and CO of my vessel. May I have the strength to not screw this up.

The transfer of the symbiont into the host Safine Ral was successful. I can do no more for the time being except keep watch and hope for the best for those involved.

Astrofori One Launch

Aron Kells

Captain's Log, Stardate 239205.09

Predictably, our first efforts weren't as productive as I would have hoped. Our undercover meeting with Commander Saveron's contact at the Romulan Embassy recalled for our benefit a long and amiable if sporadic relationship; the Romulan Empire has apparently prospered thanks to trade with the Va Wreth. Meanwhile, Doctor Skyfire, Counselor Moonsong, and Ensign King discovered that the Community also knows of them, with species memories dating back perhaps beyond the rise of the Menthar. However, we weren't much closer to understanding the Va Wreth themselves, so we set out again -- Skyfire's team to the Tholians, who sponsored the Va Wreth's bid for representation on Astrofori One, and mine to the Peppalexans, who joined the Kubarey -- though not yet openly -- in opposing the Va Wreth's presence. We were still undercover as Romulans, and as the Peppalexans had not yet formally met that species, our meeting was certain to be an interesting one....

As Lt. Commander Mei'konda and I walked into the Va Wreth reception, I did my best to put the awkwardness of working with Director Reynolds aside and remain focused on the task at hand: finding any evidence to substantiate the Kubarey's claims against the mysterious species.

However, no sooner had we arrived at the reception than the room suffered a momentary power outage. As one of the hosts reassured us to remain calm in the area, I suspected we might not have been the only ones on a clandestine operation that night. Unfortunately, my fears were proved correct…

The crew of the Garuda have been assigned to find out the truth behind some rather heinous accusations by the Kubarey against the Va Wreth, a nomadic, trader species. As Starfleet has little knowledge of this race or its culture, it’s up to us to figure out the truth. Assigned to Commander Rahman's team, we elected to take a direct approach, with Dunruss and I personally attending a reception sponsored by the Va Wreth. He surprised me with knowledge and talent in the field of dancing, a skill not necessary to the mission, but interesting nonetheless.

Our hostess greeted us warmly and encouraged us to not only sample refreshments but to ask about the variety of items on display - things gathered and traded for by the Va Wreth. Some of their items are common, but beautiful and unique in size and quality. During a tour which the hostess granted us, we found ourselves interrupted by an announcement, and our hostess requested immediate action from another of her kind to find out what was going on. Meanwhile, Dunross and I continued our tour, and I hoped that my standing as a trader, new to the business, might allow me to establish a rapport with the Va Wreth - and hopefully the ability to find out the authenticity behind the Kubarey’s allegations. At least, that was the idea until we received some unexpected and rather unsettling news...

I’d heard that the Tholians were xenophobic and reclusive, and hate being lied to. The Romulan makeup itches like no other itching agent I’ve encountered. I also suspect something happened in Counselor Moonsong’s mind with the loss of the Community representatives and their abilities that may have awoken something in my genetic makeup.

She went with me and Lt. Commander Delano to an audience with the Tholians. Gallene is thus far the nicest Tholian I’ve met, and the only. Whether our coming clean about our purpose pays off remains to be seen...

I’ve got to pull myself together before I really am declared unfit for duty. I am having doubts about what we need to learn about the Va Wreth. Opinion is very polarized. The Community’s memory of them goes back the furthest I think, but their interactions with the nomadic race were limited. They did trade for pieces of technology that they use to make them a star faring race.

Based on what the Confluence has shared, they travel as clans around this sector of space. The Clans take thousands of year to move from sector to sector. The Kubarey hate them enough to be against them being included which started us on this mess. The Romulans consider them friends and mentors. The Tholians, one of the most xenophobic races in the quadrant sponsored them.

I wonder if the reactions the different races had to the Va Wreth is not based on just species, but the interactions with different Va Wreth clan groups.

Mission Commander's Personal Log, SD 239205.16

I'm nervous. The mission that the Garuda crew is embarking on is hardly one that they're suited to -- these are my officers, my former crew, and they're scientists, explorers, engineers, thinkers, doers... This sort of underhanded affair isn't a good use of their skills. But I still don't see a way around doing it, because the bottom line is that we screwed up. The Federation allowed the Tholians to vouch for the Va Wreth without checking on them ourselves. It was a hell of an oversight, but it also means -- since it was allowed to get this far -- that it's become my oversight to correct. I am loathe to think that I've sent those officers out on a silly chase based on the angry hearsay or the angry stereotyping of a few Kubarey -- but, no matter who the Va Wreth are, and what they may or may not have done, the bottom line is that we need to know more, that we (that I) less a wholly unknown species establish its presence on this station a few days before its launch.

My group's efforts were, by most reckonings, extremely successful. The Community, the Romulan, the Tholian, and the Peppalexan delegations all consented to speak with our various representatives, though what we discovered from each of them -- as well as the hints Commanders Saveron and Delano and I received from Akharana and Erri -- did not combine into a cohesive picture of the Va Wreth. The Romulans and the Tholians told us of a species that should be included on Astrofori One, while the Peppalexans agreed with the Kubarey: The Va Wreth should be banned at once. Commander Delano, Doctor Skyfire, and Counselor Moonsong also spoke with Fleet Captain Egan Manno, and while I won't repeat her speculations here, I will say that the situation is even more politically complicated than I had thought. Now, and the beginning of our second day of investigation, my team and I will determine if confronting the Va Wreth directly is something that we wish to do.

We had a mixed string of luck yesterday with the different groups involved in this affair with some interesting results. I’ve made a discovery about the va Wreth that could affect our negotiations, and I am unaware thus far of any developments that Commander Rahman’s team may have uncovered. Only time will tell whether my discovery bears anything useful. For the moment, I’m back on my telepathic inhibitor. We’ll see how I hold up, and hopefully my insights in that manner won’t be needed..

"What makes you think I want anything?" he had said. "What makes you think you haven't already done what I wanted?"

I know Ross was just trying to play mind games with me--to throw us off his trail--but I can't shake this feeling that we're moving along just as he wants. He knows our procedures and how we think. He obviously can infiltrate our technological precautions.

My team is prepared, and I know they will do their best. Mei'konda, Tristam, and Alora will meet with the Va Wreth again. She may have her own self-doubts, but she's proven her resilience. Likewise, I have no doubt about Dunross, Tuk, and Director Reynolds, even if she can barely stand to be in the same room as me. I don't blame her, though. She doesn't trust me, and I don't know if it would make a difference if she did anyway. It's not her trust I'm concerned about; it's the captain's.

I've never been one to second guess myself, and yet despite my own assurances to Alora that she'll be okay, I find those words of little comfort for my own doubts. I now face the very situation I dreaded most when Captain Kells asked me to serve as his first officer.

And what's worse is that it's against the one man who caused me to lose that trust in myself.

The aftermath of the Community leaving me is not fading as quickly as I would have liked since I don’t have time to just sit and wait it out. At some point I am going to have to take some time if I am going to continue. In the meantime, I am concerned about the mission Captain Kells and Fleet Captain Egan Manno have set us on. To be frank, I wonder if they are not over complicating things. I get the impression that their mindsets are not comprehending the point of what Astrofori One is meant to be.

Based on the information I received, it is meant to be a place where all races can get together and work together to promote peace in the Menthar Corridor. But they seem to see it as a hostile military facility. If they do not embrace the concept, things will become much harder than they have to be.

We’re about to return to Astrofori One, and I must admit, I’m not looking forward to it. The Va Wreth are a delightfully interesting people, and I wish we had the opportunity to get to know them without Harrison Ross getting in the way. I haven’t told anyone - not even Evan - but I had a dream last night. A dream that involved… my claws, Ross’ body. I’ve never felt anything like that, this base desire for revenge…

Today’s been interesting. First it starts out with a meeting in the captain’s ready room. Then he tells me I’m to sit in the Big Chair. Call it a premonition of what’s to come, but didn’t I put on a teal collar this morning? Is it one of those chameleon collars that shifts to red when I’m not looking? Just going to roll with it, see what happens. And hope I don't screw this up.

Xenobiologist’s Log, Stardate 239206.06

“The Va Wreth are fascinating. They are truly alien in a way that other humanoid species are not. They appear to be closest in evolution to the Tholians, but that is a relative term. Blind, nomadic and gregarious traders, their culture is unexpectedly congruent given the huge differences in physiology and history. It is entirely possible that this cultural congruency is an adaption for trade, facilitated by their ‘Sethir’ Negotiators. We may yet discover that, as with my own species, the differences are all beneath the surface.”

Mission Commander's Personal Log, SD 239206.15

Had I not participated in it myself, I wouldn't have believed it. The process -- the gambit of Yal'Sethir'Anth, I should say -- went exactly as planned. All Va Wreth aboard Astrofori One left during the closed-door negotiations of the majority council, which resulted in a 3-0-1 vote for the continued presence of the Va Wreth here. I can't say which was more surprising, that the Breen consul voted for inclusion, or that the Kubarey chose to abstain. Of course, given all that I've seen go on behind the scenes in the past three days -- much of which I've ordered done -- I can't even begin to speculate regarding what those individuals may have gone through. The information provided by the teams I assigned was essential, certainly, though some of it must remain hidden for a long time to come, I expect. Not the content, I should say, but rather the circuitous manner in which it was obtained.

Now, with the Va Wreth here for good, I find myself, in the very few hours that remain before the president's address, turning to a problem of a very different sort.

Roster-rahman.jpg

First Officer's Log, Stardate 239206.16

The president is set to give her State of the Federation address in a little less than three hours. Besides Fleet Captain Egan Manno and Captain Kells, Ensign King and Petty Officer Loorix have drawn the lucky straws to be among the guests of honor. Hopefully the president's staff will be satisfied with the fresh faces.

…well, truth be told, I've selected Ensign King to accompany the captain to the address not just because of his boyish good looks but also his background of security. After Agent Zhao's betrayal, the remaining FedSec agents have been confined and are under investigation as a precaution. Invicta's security department has been assigned to protect the guests, but I still feel more comfortable having one of our own next to the captain.

Given all that's happened, the president's staff at least agreed to change the venue from the station to the Invicta itself, but even with Ross locked away on the station in a holding cell, I find little comfort. The rumors from the press are that this address will change everything. The president's staff makes it sound like no one will forget what happens here tonight.

I hope they are all wrong. Inshallah, this address will just be another vapid night of forgettable platitudes and applause, lost into the annals of history.
