She was born on New Kenya which was one of the second series of colony worlds settled by humans from Earth. Most of these colonists came from the region known as Africa. Primarily the south central region. Almost half of these colonists identified themselves as Zulus.  
She was born on the USS Goodwill and lived there till she was 8, then her family retired from Starfleet and moved to Earth. She spent the next 10 years in the city of [[wp:Amsterdam|Amsterdam]] which is located in  [[wp:Holland|Holland]].  
 
She was a popular girl in school with a number of friends. The same can be said of her 4 years at the Academy. As for her time with in Starfleet she has always been popular with her fellow crew members.


Her family live and work in the outer area outside of the capitol city of Nairobi. Her parents both teach at the Nairobi University which is where they met. Every member of her family have the same tall, slim athletic build that is a sure indication that they are of Zulu descent.  
Darla was a good student who also enjoyed competitive skiing in the winter and competitive swimming in the summer. She was also a contestant for Miss Teen Europe when she was 16 but was easily defeated. She has maintained her skill level at both skiing and swimming whenever she could get the time to train and practice.
