Claire Ellis was the chief science officer of the USS Yuan Tseh Lee was killed in 2373 when the ship was ambushed by the Jem'Hadar during the Dominion War.
She was friends with the ship's operations officer Joseph Washington and had tried to teach him how to knit before eventually giving up, calling him a "lost cause." Following Claire's death, Joseph completed a scarf she had been working on for her sister and continued to learn the craft from her notes. He maintains a close relationship with Claire's surviving son Grant.
