Any php wizards out there?

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hey everyone,

The UPDS is experiencing some issues due to a recent php upgrade on our web host. I need some assistance from someone who knows php and can assist with fixing the UPDS. I'm assuming that the changes will be fairly simple, to bring the UPDS into line with the newest version of php.

Thanks!

Yes, the website is still messed up

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hey folks,

Please keep in mind that the UPDS is currently down. We're working to get it fixed, but we're running into some serious issues. There are a number of forms across the site which are not functioning, as well. We will notify this list when everything is back online. Thanks for your patience!

Top Sims Contest revamped!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone!

Just a quick note to tell you that we've completely revamped the Top Sims Contest, to give power to YOU! You're now able to submit sims, rate sims, and vote on the ultimate winner of each round!

Each round's submission period will last for two weeks. You'll then have two weeks to vote on those sims. At the end of the year, the top sim will be voted on, and the winner will be announced during the award ceremony. (Which, by the way, the 2007 award ceremony will be completed very soon, with all the winners announced within the next seven days!)

This is all in your hands now -- your crew can hold the glory, or leave empty handed. To learn more about how it works, and to start submitting sims, head to the Top Sims Contest area of our website at the following URL:

http://www.starbase118.net/members/events/topsims/

We look forward to seeing all your submissions!

Top Sims Contest - Round 1 voting, Round 2 submissions!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone!

The Top Sims Contest is kicking into high-gear as we start voting on the submissions from Round 1. Be sure to head directly to our Top Sims Contest Forum (URL below) and vote on the best-written sim, to give it a chance to continue on to the final voting round for a chance at the "Top Sim" title!

The submission period for Round 2 is also now open, which means that you can submit sims from your crew mates, and your ship staff (CO, FO) to be eligible for the voting stage in two weeks. Remember, you can submit any sims which have been posted in the last two weeks, as well as any sims that are posted before the deadline of midnight ET on 03-02.

Please don't hesitate to submit a sim if you think it's worthy of the "Top Sim" title! This is a great way to recognize your staff and crew mates for this honor and show them how great you think their writing is. And also don't forget to RATE the other submissions you see in the Top Sims forum, to make sure that the best written sims are eligible to part of the voting round!

To, to sum it up:

1. Submit sims; 2. Rate other sims; 3. Vote on last round's sims!

Tactical & Security officers - we need your wisdom!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Comprising 1/5 of our fleet, Tactical and Security officers are a strong voice in our community. Yet surprisingly, their duty posts are one of the few that don't yet have full, detailed information about how they are played!

In an effort to finish out the Duty Posts area of our website with information on how these posts are played, and resources for those who do play these characters, we're calling on everyone who plays either of these positions to please help us! Your thoughts, wisdom, and hopefully your efforts will help round out our website and be a vital component in teaching new officers in these positions how to be an asset to their crew.

Please head immediately to your duty post's respective forum and help us:

The site is down temporarily

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

I'm working on it. I will post here when we're back up again.

We were in the process of moving to a new server with our webhost to get performance and reliability back up to normal levels, but it appears that something out of the ordinary has happened on their side.

Site back online

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

If you're still having trouble viewing the site, clear the cache on your web browser and reload the page. Additionally, depending on where you are in the world, it may take up to 24 hours for nameservers in your region to update. Please be patient, and keep trying. For most people, though, you should be able to see the site immediately!

Site issues continue

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Many apologies for the numerous e-mails, but I wanted to give a status update on the site.

For some reason, as soon as we migrated our server to a new location (in the hopes of getting better performance and reliability), we began getting absolutely deluged with some kind of attack via our forums. This brought down the entire web-host's server, which in turn got our site "turned off" by their administration.

I have been in contact with both our web-host and Invision Power Boards, the software creator of our forum software. As of right now, we know a major issue is due to the fact that our forum software is out of date. As such, we've brought the forums into maintenance mode, which means you will not have access to them. This seems to have stabilized the problem and allowed us to bring the rest of the site back online, but of course that means there's no access to the boards.

We're working on a solution and will e-mail this list as soon as we come up with something. Thanks for your patience, everyone. In the meantime, sim more! :)

Some areas of the site are back online

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hey folks,

Here's a status update on the site: some areas of the site are online, but some aren't. The forums, wiki, cadet area, and LCARS/UPDS are online. The Members area is down. You can attempt to use some of the sidebar options at starbase118.net/members, but some areas may still not work.

While you're waiting for the site to be fully functional, I'd like to ask that you update a few things to help us keep your profile current:

1. Go to the forums, log in, and click on "My Controls" near the top of the page. On the left-hand side, click on and update the information found in each of the following options: - Edit Profile Information - Edit Personal Portal Information - Change Email Address -- check to see what's listed, and update as necessary.

Further information on the board's recent upgrade is here: http://www.starbase118.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=3538

2. Go to the UPDS, log in, and update your profile and User Information. This includes promotion dates, recent awards, e-mail address, etc.! http://www.starbase118.net/lcars

3. Go to the wiki, log in, and update your character's profile. http://wiki.starbase118.net

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me directly. The next e-mail on this list SHOULD be the notification that the site is fully functional again! :)

Website mostly operating again -- don't forget: Top Sims Contest!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello again everyone,

Well, the website is mostly online. There are a few areas that are "permission only" areas which are still experiencing some issues, and ALL FORMS ARE STILL OFFLINE. Otherwise, we're good to go.

Also: don't forget that Round 3 of the Top Sims Contest has just begun! Be sure to submit the top sims for the past two weeks, and the coming two weeks, into the contest for a chance at the title of "Top Sim, 2008." We're also voting on Round 2 submitted sims, so head immediately to the Top Sims Contest forum to submit sims and vote for your favorite ones from the last round!

Site "suspended" -- no solution in the works

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone,

I have some frustrating news to share. It appears that due to an attack on our site, our hosting provider has decided to shut us down with little or no recourse on how to resolve the issue. Over the past month, this issue has popped up more and more frequently with them, but a solution is no where to be seen and their response seems to be either we cut loose the forums, buy a private (read: more expensive) server from them, or leave their hosting altogether.

As of right now, we're simply in a holding pattern until I can figure something out.

Update on site, as of Sunday evening 03-16

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone,

As some of you are aware, the site was brought back online tentatively last night. I have discussed the issue with our hosting provider, and I intend to make some changes to the way our site is configured. Basically, we will be moving the forums to their own server "node" so that they're separate from the main site. This way, if the forums go down, the whole site is not affected.

Over the next 48 hours, we will be taking the forums down for this move. They will then be found at "http://forums.starbase118.net" instead of the current URL.

Before the move is made, I will turn the forums on "administrative mode," which means they will not be accessible. This will ensure we don't lose any posts in the transfer.

It is my hope that after we've segregated the forums, we can finally confirm that it is attacks on the forums which are the problem, and encourage our host to solve the problem on their side (by blocking attacking IP addresses) before assuming we're running a malicious site and shutting us down.

Thanks to everyone who contacted me about hosting. Unfortunately, we have some rather intensive requirements when it comes to hosting, which won't fit well with most "home grown" solutions. Primarily, we require a "reseller" setup, so that each ship and some areas of our site (wiki, now the forums, etc.) can have their own web-based Control Panel, access restrictions, and php access (some aspects of our site require php4, others php5). As of now, we use about 2 gigs of storage space and about 1.5 gigs of bandwidth.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me directly. I will update this list when the transfer is complete and the site is fully accessible again. Feel free to continue accessing the site in the mean time. (The Top Sims Contest, Round 3, closes at midnight PT tonight, BTW! Voting for Round 2 also closes at that time.)

Forums back at old location

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

We started the transfer to the new location, but it looks like there will be some issues with using the forums on the subdomain location with our permission access system. So, as of right now, things are going to stay the way they are.

The forums are open at: starbase118.net/forums

Don't forget to submit sims in Round 4 of the Top Sims contest, and vote on sims from Round 3!!

Website issues

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello,

I am aware that the website has been intermittently unaccessible over the past week. Our host is having some scaling issues as their business grows. I am keeping on them :)

The wiki is on a different server than our main site, and as such has been consistently reliable. Feel free to expend creative energy there! And of course, the Yahoo! Groups are completely unrelated (thankfully!) and as such, you should have regular access to them.

As of now, I'm recommending that if you cannot reach the website, that you should wait 15 minutes and try again. Please do not e-mail me directly unless the site has been consistently unavailable for at least three hours or more. If I hear something from our host, I will be sure to pass it on.

Help needed with awards project - no experience needed, very easy!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hey folks!

It's getting to that time of year again: awards time! Unfortunately, I've been so busy with other stuff in the past, oh 10 months, that I haven't had time to organize and post the information about who won last year's awards. Yikes!

What I need is just two or three people who can help me get all the awards info into a few different formats. First, I'll need someone to take some files from last year and just organize names alphabetically/ by ship/ by award. Pretty easy stuff, just takes a little while to do.

Then, I'll need someone to take that information and put it into a format that I can use to easily update our website with this information. It's a very simple template, you don't need any experience in HTML or anything else, and again -- very easy to do, just takes a little time.

Expect to spend about 2-3 hours, assuming you're taking your sweet time and maybe even watching TV while you're doing it ;)

If you can help, please e-mail me directly ASAP (t.wolf@...)! We need to get this taken care of very soon, so I'd appreciate an enthusiastic response.

Thank you, everyone!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone!

Now's your chance to choose one of the 20 sims to proceed to the final round. Another sim will be chosen in two weeks (in Runoff Round 2) to face off against the sim chosen this week.

Get your award nominations ready!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

We'll be opening up the end-of-year award nominations very soon!

Be sure to get your nominations prepared, so you have them ready for the two-week nomination period when it opens.

Head here:

http://www.starbase118.net/members/events/awards/

Take a look at the awards that are available, and who has received them. You will need to provide us with a short reason for why you are nominating each person, so please be sure to think on that a little! Remember that some awards are only given once per ceremony, so the better your reasoning for nomination, the more likely it is that your candidate will be the chosen person for the award.

We'll announce when the nomination period opens in the next few days!

If you need any help with the nomination process, feel free to ask your First Officer, Captain, or fellow crewmates who were here last year.

The nomination period closes on Wednesday, December 17th at 11:59pm Pacific Time, so please don't dawdle!

Were you having problems with the forums?

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone!

Please excuse the coming high-volume on this list. We have a lot of e-mails to get sent out before the end of the year ;)

The first of these is a fix (hopefully!) for those of you who were experiencing problems finding some of our forums on the message boards, like the EAGLE, INDRIA, and TIGER forums. Please head to the forums now, if you were having problems finding them, and see if they appear for you:

The reason for this issue is that many people on the forums will find themselves in the "Members, Jr." user-group, on which the permissions for the forum were set up wrong. Registrants to the boards find themselves in this group automatically, and only move to "Members, Sr." if they either post over 100 times on the boards, OR they are a Lieutenant Junior Grade. This "Members, Jr." group just ensures that our members get a feel of the community before they're given the option to post new threads (as opposed to new replies to threads, which EVERYONE can post!).

If you are a Lieutenant JG, and you see "Members, Jr." by your name, please e-mail me immediately and I will upgrade you to the "Members, Sr." group. But EVERYONE should now be able to see all the appropriate forums without a problem!

Quick note about the website

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello again,

Sorry for double posting today, but I did want everyone to be aware of a change we've made to the website.

The main landing page for the site, starbase118.net, has been changed. We've moved what used to be the old "Prospective Member's Entrance" to starbase118.net. This, we hope, will help search engines index our site easier, and will also put prospective cadets directly into the tour, instead of confusing them with the members/cadets side of the site.

There is still a button on the nav bar of this page, called "Members Area," which will direct you to the member's side of the site. You may find it easier as a current member to bookmark "http://www.starbase118.net/members".
